This is borderline to me (a fair amount of complexity, not a lot of bake time for the changes in-tree to see if there's fallout). However, I think the changes are correct and the Linux kernel use case is an important one, so I'm tentatively in support of backporting this.
@melver will you be around for the next few weeks in case there's fallout when rc2 goes out? I expect we'll find any significant concerns pretty quickly from there, particularly if the Linux kernel is testing against the rc.
