I was just highlighting some possible issues and a suggestion (which I
think is worthy of consideration solely from the fact that it pushes errors
to link time). It's more likely that you or Rafael will be the ones
directly impacted by this addition to the C API, so I think it would be
best for you guys to decide which tradeoffs are appropriate as far as API
design, compatibility, and long-term maintainability.
