            Bug ID: 45465
Summary: Feature request: Add capability to emulate earlier
                    versions
           Product: clang
           Version: unspecified
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P
         Component: Formatter
          Assignee: unassignedclangbugs at nondot.org
          Reporter: jonas at lippuner.ca
CC: djasper at google.com, klimek at google.com,

As you know, the formatting produced by different versions of clang-format is
not entirely consistent. So if you use clang-format-9 to format some code, the
result will the slightly different than if you use clang-format-8 even if the
config file is exactly the same.

This is causing some issues for our collaboration since different developers
have different version of clang-format installed and available on their various
Linux distros.

It would be great if a later version of clang-format was able to emulate the
formatting of a previous version. For example, if the project decides to use
clang-format-8, those people who have clang-format-9 could just pass a flag to
clang-format-9 that tells it to format the code like clang-format-8 used to do
it.

I know this may be non-trivial to implement, but I think there would a number
of collaborative coding projects that would benefit from this feature.
