Raphael's CLike typesystem is designed to work around the fragile parts of that task.  If that works as it should the comments about the bugginess of the expression evaluator won't age well.

It is, however, true that expression evaluation has intrinsic downsides: it is always going to be slower because it involves running the target.  It also can change program state in unexpected ways, so it is worth not doing that when you don't have to.  Problems with stranding locks, for instance, are hard to avoid when you are running code in contexts where that code didn't expect to be run...
