This seems like a way too negative presentation that leaves out the actual reasons why DIL is useful to users of lldb (as opposed to the reasons we use it to work around bugs that are our fault.)
We would want to do the DIL even if the expression evaluator were 100% efficient because we think having a language accurate expression evaluator is of great utility (note gdb has added such a thing as well, though it is restricted, IIUC to `top-level` evaluations) so maybe we weren't wrong about that, but we also know that the presentation of values the underlying types afford is often a not helpful presentation. Instead of trying to introduce the re-presentation into the language accurate expression evaluator w/o making it not language accurate - a probably impossible task - we introduced the two parallel systems.
WE know that we also are trying to work around expression evaluation being slow by nature, and sometimes buggy - though it actually works surprisingly well TTTT given the complexity of the problem - but that's really not a helpful perspective for our users.
