I'm not a huge fan of how this got wired around here.  I like the idea of suppressing the built RecoveryExpr, but pushing around an extra set like this for this purpose seems odd? 

What about teaching CandidateSet's iterators to self-filter?  And doesn't CandidateSet already know its valid list?
