I'd suggest stepping back a bit, and continue the discussion under the issue before spending more time on this.

As I wrote under that issue, IMO the `bind` is correct - at least when I looked at the given example it behaves as intended. The bug is in loading from the bitfield - but see my reasoning under the issue instead of having this discussion at two different places.
