LGTM. Unfortunately, I don't have free capacity now to chase this down further and breaking people is a bad trade-off.

@alexfh, it would be nice to add a test for the code where the formatting that was broken ; in case someone attempts this or similar change again, we'd be able to potentially avoid another rollback cycle.
