To clarify the order: I didn't know about #221293 when I opened this PR. I found it the next day while addressing Federico's review, and added the cc and the "Related" line then. I should have searched the open PRs first, and once I found it I should have asked there how to proceed. I'll do both from now on.

I've added #227821 to the description and addressed the inline comments in f3e22ab347c4.
