the machine certainly does have these libraries installed.  After all, it has
been building correctly with Fortran for some time now.  If you look further
up the log-file you will see it that the Fortran front-end was already built.
It is when using the newly built gfortran in a later configure test that things
go wrong, suggesting that the newly built gfortran was not working properly.
