I don't know what the original motivation was and how much of a perf/size win it was, but considering the buggy edge cases we found here (with the help of an LLM, I'd never be able to come up with these myself) (most of them apply to the `main` branch as well) I kinda feel like the complexity of this transformation may not worth it.
