Interesting. For me I have `LESS=FRX` in the pager environment. This is [added by Git](https://github.com/git/git/blob/477ce5ccd69bda5c44f53e3b230f8a9c54217ed6/Makefile#L2197) when it launches the pager; the `R` causes it to interpret ANSI codes. Maybe you are overriding `LESS` to something else? Do you have colors enabled (`git config color.ui`) and do they display properly?
