The "2>1" syntax is wrong here, it should be "2>&1". The problem was
hidden by the "|&" operator, which copied the error stream into the pipe
anyway, but we shouldn't be using "|&" because it isn't portable.

I've fixed this (and the other use of "|&") in r233309.
