Proposed patches for the 3.6 branch

The first one is r226022.patch. It is a revert of a previous patch I
wrote. The fixed version is being reviewed, but there is no reason to
rush it to 3.6.

The second is one is 225957.patch. It is in the branch, but we might
want to revert it.

It was a last minute change to enable the integrated assembler in more
situations. In addition to how it was committed on trunk, Chandler and
Hal raised questions about the change itself, so we might be better
with it out of 3.6.
