Lovely, I was thinking of doing something similar myself.
Eric, I agree that this is only a stopgap until a "new and improved" driver mechanism is in place, but it does look to be a good addition?

Yes, I have also changed the cmake system.
To define LLVM_DEFAULT_TARGET_TRIPLE, I followed and modified
accordingly all the places where LLVM_HOSTTRIPLE was defined.
