Sure, but what about the case where they don't choose a new nickname and
radically change their operating system. It will continue to report
under the same machine name and allow comparisons between apples and
oranges.

The change is made, lets just leave it alone for now. If it bites us we
can undo the patch.  Not worth arguing over :)
