The attached program changes its output depending on the optimization level:

regehr at home:~$ clang -O0 overflow.c -o overflow

I believe this is a bug and that the -O0 output is correct.  The C99 standard
states that:

  The expression ++E is equivalent to (E+=1).

Thus, x must be promoted to int before the addition takes place and so there is
no undefined behavior due to overflow.
