So you did, d'oh!  The gcc 4.1.2 compiler is known to be
broken on many platforms, see
  http://llvm.org/docs/GettingStarted.html#brokengcc
The typical symptom is that people get the error you are
getting, so I'm pretty sure this is the cause.
