Log:
Port r226022 to the 3.6 branch.
r225644 is a revert of r225644. A fixed version for trunk is being reviewed, but there is
no need to rush this into 3.6.
Original message:
Revert "Add r224985 back with two fixes."
This reverts commit r225644 while I debug a regression.
