There's no good way to phrase it, but "typed output" sounds like the opposite of what supplying a format would do. Given that formats are things like uint32_t, which is a type.

Maybe instead:
"This overrides any other register type information"

Which isn't that informative either but at least it makes sense to someone who wanted a custom format.
