Reverted the subclass approach, back to the union approach, and watched the Linux/Windows PR test results.  The size of Symbol went from 80 to 400 with the union approach on those bots; the size of Symbol remains 80 on AArch64 macOS with a union or subclass.  Need to repo on linux and investigate.
