I have decided to not stir the scope of this PR any more, and just reverted the custom targeting from `SBValue` and updated the test accordingly.

Sorry for ballooning this discussion this large, I was genuinely surprised about the automatic retargeting even though I have been writing synthetics for a while by now. Thanks for all the explanations and feedback so far!
