I just realized that I overthought this, and we can backport this patch into the release branch because it's ongoing right now. Then we can just remove the deprecation error once binary minus is added without doing anything else.

I'm not sure how to add the change to the release notes though, since they're already cleared. Do I make a separate PR right into the release branch?
