If we are to do a major rewriting of regex, I think we need to first beef up our test suite in that area, because I am absolutely certain our current test coverage is insufficient. I think we could generate a bunch of regular expressions and inputs, and expected results, and then check against that. The approach would be similar to what we do for testing `__cxa_demangle`.

There might even be existing datasets for the various dialects we support.
