Thank you Andrew for this work. I think the overall approach makes sense, my comments are just over a few details.

I added quite a few suggestions to the documentation, to try to make it a bit easier to follow and perhaps clarify a couple of points. Feel free to ignore any suggestions there that you think don't improve the text.
