[cfe-dev] gold plugin for LTO

hello clang,

  we will build our toolchain from source and adding the gold plugin to
them. This means we'll have to repackage rather old versions, presently
3.8.0 and 5.0.0. Instructions at https://llvm.org/docs/GoldPlugin.html tell
to clone binutils and use master/HEAD.

Is this fine (in that the plugin is supposed to be version independent)? if
not, are there way to get the specific binutils commit that was used to
validate LTO with arbitrary versions of LLVM?
