As in my other reply, my intention is to set a date to remove the files, forcing packaging scripts to be updated. I'm not sure if that is acceptable practice, so would need guidance. I'll send an email to cfe-dev. I intend to send a patch for the Debian packaging, and I'll see if I can find the maintainers for other popular distros to let them know.
