Ugh, also, there are a bunch of changes in this commit that didn't have
anything to do with the actual commit, they were just cleanups. It would be
good to keep such changes in separate commits in the future... I'm like to
end up accidentally reverting some of them as I switch over to just using
RUN lines. Sorry for that.
