A key difference is that if we mmap in the preamble we only lazily page in what we actually need, versus if we keep the PCH blob in memory all of those pages are used. Multiply that by N ASTUnits with preambles, and I believe that will possibly add up to considerably more memory usage. It does take memory to generate the preamble, but that is transient.
To accurately measure to the memory impact of the mmap'ed preambles, we'd need to know how many pages were actually paged in.
