FYI, I'm slowly building a mental model for LFTR and it's approach and limitations.  As part of that, I've been checking in a set of tests changes, NFC code motion, and strengthened assertions.  You may find them interesting.  I'm a couple of days at current rate of progress from being able to meaningfully respond to your comments above.
