What's the best way to progress this in a way that doesn't make your life harder later when your rewrite lands? Getting GMR preserved gives us nontrivial performance boosts on workloads we care about, so I'd like to see a solution that works both short and long term if possible.

Shall I try hal's suggestion? We can always tip it out when your rewrite lands? :)
