I find that the thread.gmane.org webui is usually the best, e.g. <
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.compilers.llvm.cvs/121622/>.

In order to get to that page, this is my usual incantation:
* google for the thread title or some other easily-found thing in the thread
* usually one of the top results is a "permalink.gmane.org" link to a
random post in the thread
* from the "permalink.gmane.org" page I edit the URL to replace "permalink"
by "thread".
* then, if necessary, by repeatedly clicking the link next to "subject" you
can navigate to the top of the thread.

It's ugly, but it can be worth it if careful scrutiny of a thread is
necessary.
