        <pre>Consider the following program:

  int main() {
      extern int x;
      extern double x;
  }

When compiling it, the following output is given:

  error: redefinition of 'x' with a different type: 'double' vs 'int'
      extern double x;
                    ^

  note: previous definition is here
      extern int x;
                 ^

In that message the words redefinition and definition are used. The
declarations in the body of main are not definitions, so the error message and
its note is misleading.

Compare with gcc:

error: conflicting declaration 'double x'
     extern double x;
                   ^
note: previous declaration as 'int x'
     extern int x;
                ^</pre>
