This bug prompted bug 351 which intends to place the minimal set of system
dependent functionality into a set of abstractions in lib/System. Much of
lib/Support will go away when that work is completed. What remains in
lib/Support will be combinations and usage of lib/System to make accessing
system dependent functionality easier. 

Consequently, all of the things requested by this bug are implied by bug 351
(and more) and it is therefore being resolved as a duplicate of bug 351
