Sounds good to me.

One small comment/thread_hijack; can we have "make update", or is there 
an alternative I've missed?

build
    release (cmake/ninja)
    debug (cmake/ninja)
    update (configure/autostuffnobodyunderstands so I can "make update")

It's the one thing I'm missing.
